Minor Bugs in V8 + wishlist for V9

Hi Chris and thanks for your awesome control station for everything - okay, not everything, but who wants his roller shutter to open and close in arps 🤔

As you know, I use it to control four different Synths - Bass, Arp, Chord and Drone and as a master clock for ko2-drums and fx.

Now we have come a long way and I guess V9 will arrive soon, so here is a short list of old and new bugs and wishes:

. missing live performance mode

. Chord chain stucks or doesn't start after change of pattern

. still encountering random weird tempo glitches, if using poly & chord-mode with chops - but that's perhaps my ko2

Cheers for the summary wish list. I've added it to the mop up task for V9 and will review fully in due course. I'm a little delayed with V9 as there have been so many other things on. It won't be too long though. Thanks again! Chris

Live rhythm & groove recording

First sorry for my bad english and maybe my idea is difficult to explain.

With Rhythm patterns and Groove patterns you can configure gate, velocity and delay into a pattern for each step seperately. This is great but also a little uncomfortable (sometimes ;-)).

In most little drum machines like Volca Beats you can use a kind of live mode where you play/drum live on an instrument and it is directly recorded to the sequencer. So in Midicake Arp: wouldn`t it be possible to record and transform a live played rythm (One knop on device or external drum pad) to a rythm/groove pattern? This would really help me to create intuitive rythm patterns on the go(groove patterns I don`t use very much). Hopefully my words make any sense.

I suspected it couldn’t fit into the philosophy of the Arp 🙂. Maybe this kind of live recording requires a new kind of live sequencer data structure beside rythm and groove.

Makam Scale

Hello again,

I'm really really looking forward to V9 - thank you for your precious work!

Actually we are on a Balkan-Trip and I love the Hungarian Scales in the Arp.

But wouldn't it be great, also for the Arabic market, to support microtuning over pitchbend?

Like the pitch filter became somehow unimportant for me after you installed the song-mode in the sequencer - because I now can set the pitch start there plus the note offset and the step limitations (or vice versa) can replace the pitch filter - it would be a lot more versatile to send pitchbends and automate them for arabic or turkish scales..

Sorry for all my ideas - they are just brain-noise I have to get out. I'm totally fine with your awesome gear, but inspirations come and go, right??

Hey Chris and thank you for your fast response and the explanation - everything understood.

Normally, I don't do beta-testing any more, but if v9 shouldn't be ready soon, I would make an exception..

Thanks for watching

Btw, I forgot how good cables and a decent mixer are able to spice up music.

See ya

Yamaha Seqtrak like Visualizer

So in the beta version 9 we have a visualizer for showing notes as beams in a piano roll. Why not extend it to some different display types, different visualizers like Yamaha does in the Seqtrak App? OK, Yamaha exaggerated it a bit 🙂. But something similar would be a cool feature for the Arp, wouldn’t it?

Yes, it's a good idea. While, I don't want the visualizers to just be a gimmicky feature, the note visualizer and piano roll in Connect are useful tools for seeing the effects of your parameter changes. I do have one other visualizer that I think would be interesting. The issue is available time to do the development work. What other visualizer styles would you like to see?

Custom chord editing in the chord chain editor / Tap Tempo

As V9 is right around the corner I might be a little late to the party, but after playing around with the arp for some days, the following things came in mind:

  • It would be helpful when the custom chord editing (long press on chord button) would also be available in the chord chain editor.

  • Regarding custom chords, if the notes selection is equal to any of the preset chords the display should show this chord instead.

  • A Tap Tempo function. I plan to use the arp in jam situations then this might become handy. Though I have no idea which button to use for this so maybe this will not happen but it would be nice.

1) A 8 chords set per bank that is shared between all chains of a bank (when chain set per bank will come with V9) is still much an improvement. My request wasn't going that far, it was just about having the chord to chord button assignments available in the chain editor mode. At the moment, if I want to setup a chain and realize, I need a specific chord that isn't on the buttons yet, I have to leave the chord editor, assign the chord to the button and enter it again. 2) Thank you😀

3) Holding the Program button and tap tempo with the Play button sounds very good!

Sustain pedal support (CC64)

I enjoy playing with Live Play on Note Input and would like a way to hold the chord. Unless I'm missing an existing menu option... I would love see the ability added to use a normal midi keyboard sustain pedal CC64 message to "hold" the external chord. Thanks, love the Arp!

Regarding the "Hold" setting... Does this differ to pressing Play on ARP? Once playing, ARP will continue to arpeggiate until you hit Stop.

Keyboard split - dry thru option

I may be missing something, but when using key split I cannot find a way to allow "thru" the input notes from in the filtered out region of the keyboard.

When using key split, it would be nice to allow thru for the input notes aren't in the active arpeggiator region (high or low). Perhaps it could be a new option under Midi Thru for "On (in key split)"?

Both options definitely seem workable to me. Agreed that #2 feels a bit cleaner. Thank you for looking at this!

On a side note -- I do wonder if the current Key Split behavior is actually intentional... The manual's description for the behavior of Key Split is exactly what I'm trying to do. The manual says: "This setting lets you specify the MIDI Note, above or below which keyboard notes will be ignored for note sync and live play but will pass through to your sound generating device. This enables you to “split” an external MIDI keyboard such that one hand can set the chord for ARP and the other hand can, for example, play a melody or bassline that does not affect ARP’s MIDI Input notes."

Currently if I turn key split on it does not pass through the notes that are ignored for note sync and live play. This may be a bug? This is the current behavior when Midi Thru is OFF. If I turn Midi Thru ON now it passes all notes through including those being used for note sync and live play.

Chop not working

I've found that with the current firmware (v8) the Chop function doesn't seem to be fully working. When I set it above 0, it will only effectively behave as Chop=1. In other words, I can only get a "double note" out of it. Chopping to 3 or 4 notes doesn't seem to be outputting additional note on/off values.

You were right, it was the time division! I've now changed it from 1/16 to 1/8 and can get 4 chop notes. Thank you.

Lock chord keybord in the chord scale

Hello

Is it possible to lock the keyboard keys to the chords of a scale?

For example, in Major key G, the chords are G, Am, Bm, C, D, Em, F#dim. Is it possible to configure the ARP so that when I press the B key, it plays a Bm chord directly without having to press the Minor key first, or the press F# key to play a F#dim chord without having to press the Dim key first.

I would have this to save time when changing chords and stay more focused on my performance.

Thank you

Regards

I'd really appreciate this, because for a musician it is the natural way to chose chords. If you aren't a trained musician, you don't know instantly, when you are in a key what chords the V or the ii actually are, but you know, it has to be a V (or a ii). And also, if the key is set, you could play a chord with one button press, which is way more natural as always to think about if the chord will be a minor or a major or anything else and then press another button for the actual chord. Having chords from the scale steps instantly at hand would be such a handy shortcut for this!
